La Pirinola

3rd graders got to play La Pirinola last week as part of their intensive number review this year.  It is a fun dreidel-like toy that when it lands you have to follow the directions on the side that lands up.  Learning to say the numbers in Spanish and think in Spanish was a challenge.

Here are a couple of foldables the 4th graders have completed in learning about the planets and ordinal numbers in Spanish.

Grange Hall 4th graders are learning about the planets in Spanish class.  To help them remember the names of all of the planets in Spanish I have been showing this old video from the 80's.  I explain to them that the planets are not in order and it is a bit out of date (including Pluto as a planet) but they thoroughly enjoy the catchy tune and saying the names of the planets.

International Week

International Week was so much fun with so many fabulous visitors to our classes.  We met parents from Bolivia and Central America and Puerto Rico.  We met parents who use a second language in their jobs doing everything from translating to housecleaning to dental work.  The students got to see how valuable knowing a second language is when they start working.  Here are some pictures of our visitors.

So far this week has been a lot of fun for the students of Grange Hall.  On Monday they got to see all of the different languages their teachers studied while in high school and college.  On Tuesday they wore t-shirts with other languages on them.  I was really impressed with the ones the kids made themselves. 

And today we had a scavenger hunt in resource.  All along we've had parents visiting our classes telling us about how they use other languages in their jobs or about the countries they are from.  One parent taught himself Japanese as a child and now runs a successful business as a translator.  Another parent has learned 7 languages in her lifetime and has lived in many different countries. 

I'm looking forward to the rest of this week and what it might bring.

Spanish club update

I'm sorry it's been so long since I've updated this blog.  I've been wanting to share some pictures of the last Spanish club (over a month ago).
